Overview
TSMC was founded in 1987 with a business model that was unusual for its time: rather than designing its own chips and selling them under its own brand, it would manufacture chips designed by other companies on a contract basis, a model known as a pure-play foundry. This separated chip design from chip fabrication at a moment when most semiconductor companies did both in-house, and it let smaller design firms without the capital to build fabrication plants compete by outsourcing manufacturing to TSMC instead. Mechanically, TSMC's factories, called fabs, take a customer's chip design and fabricate it using advanced photolithography processes that pattern billions of transistors onto silicon wafers at extremely small scales, measured in nanometers. TSMC continually advances to smaller process nodes, which pack more transistors into the same area and generally improve performance and power efficiency, and being first to reliably mass-produce each new node has become a major competitive advantage, since customers designing next-generation chips want access to the most advanced manufacturing available. TSMC's foundry-only model distinguishes it from integrated device manufacturers like Samsung and Intel, which design and sell their own chips in addition to offering foundry services to outside customers. Because TSMC has no competing chip product line of its own, customers do not worry that their proprietary designs might benefit a rival product, which has helped TSMC attract nearly every major fabless chip designer as a customer, including companies that could theoretically use Samsung's or Intel's foundry services instead. In practice, TSMC fabricates the processors inside iPhones, Nvidia's AI accelerators, AMD's CPUs and GPUs, and Qualcomm's Snapdragon chips, among many others, meaning a large share of the world's advanced computing hardware passes through TSMC's fabs regardless of which brand appears on the final product. Its most advanced fabs are concentrated in Taiwan, though it has been building additional fabrication capacity in the United States, Japan, and Europe partly in response to customer and government interest in geographically diversifying chip manufacturing. The concentration of advanced chip manufacturing at TSMC creates a significant supply-chain dependency: geopolitical tensions involving Taiwan, natural disasters, or capacity constraints at TSMC can ripple through the entire technology industry, since there are few alternative suppliers capable of matching its most advanced process nodes at comparable scale. Building a new leading-edge fab elsewhere takes years and enormous capital investment, which is why efforts to diversify chip manufacturing outside Taiwan are gradual rather than immediate, and why TSMC's own overseas fabs still generally trail its Taiwan-based facilities in initial capability.
