No. Compression happens in your browser using the Canvas API. The file never leaves your device, which is why the tool works offline once the page has loaded and why there is no file-size limit beyond your own memory.
At the default 75% quality, photographs typically drop 60–80% in size with no visible difference. Flat graphics and screenshots compress less on JPEG but do very well converted to WebP — the tool shows the exact saving per file before you download.
JPEG and WebP are lossy formats, so some data is discarded. Above roughly 70% quality the loss is invisible at normal viewing sizes. Drop below 50% and you will start to see blocking around edges and in smooth gradients.
Images are usually the Largest Contentful Paint element, and LCP is a Core Web Vitals ranking signal. A hero image cut from 1.8 MB to 200 KB can move LCP from failing to passing on a mobile connection.
