Whichever one your university publishes. The ×9.5 rule comes from CBSE and is a common default; VTU, AKTU and JNTU use (CGPA − 0.75) × 10; GTU and KTU subtract 0.5; Mumbai University uses 7.1 × CGPA + 11. They give noticeably different answers, so the scheme matters more than the arithmetic.
Because a bare number cannot be checked. If you are filling in an application, you need to know which scheme produced the figure so you can confirm it matches your transcript — and spot it immediately if the wrong one was selected.
CGPA is the credit-weighted average of your SGPAs, not a plain average — a 24-credit semester counts more than an 18-credit one. Averaging them equally is the most common error in student calculators and can be off by a few tenths, which matters at cut-offs.
Treat it as a check, not a certificate. Universities revise conversion formulas by regulation and by batch, and admissions offices usually want the official conversion certificate from your registrar. Use this to verify that certificate looks right, not to replace it.
