WebP is the safe default: it is supported by every current browser and cuts about 30% off JPEG. AVIF compresses roughly 50% smaller but encodes slowly and is not supported by every browser build, so serve it as a progressive enhancement with WebP or JPEG as a fallback.
AVIF encoding depends on the browser exposing an AVIF encoder to the Canvas API. Chrome and Edge do; some Firefox and Safari builds only decode AVIF. The tool detects support on load and disables the option rather than silently producing a PNG named ".avif".
Yes. WebP and AVIF both support an alpha channel, so transparency is preserved. Converting to JPEG does not — transparent pixels are flattened onto a white background, which the tool warns you about before conversion.
