Qualcomm began as a company focused on CDMA wireless technology, a digital cellular standard it helped develop and commercialize in the late 1980s and 1990s. Rather than only building chips, Qualcomm built a dual business: designing silicon and licensing the underlying wireless patents to virtually every phone manufacturer, which became a durable and high-margin revenue stream independent of whether a given phone actually uses Qualcomm's own chips.
