Overview
Developed and maintained by Offensive Security, Kali Linux is the successor to BackTrack Linux and has become the de facto standard operating system for offensive security professionals. Rather than requiring users to individually install and configure security tools, Kali ships with them pre-installed and organized by category — information gathering, vulnerability analysis, web application testing, password attacks, wireless attacks, exploitation tools, sniffing and spoofing, and forensics — including well-known tools like Nmap, Metasploit, Wireshark, and Burp Suite. Kali is available as a full installable OS, a live boot image that runs without installation, a virtual machine image, and a lightweight version for ARM devices like the Raspberry Pi, making it flexible for both dedicated pentesting rigs and portable field use. It's built specifically for Penetration Testing and Red Team engagements, and is explicitly not intended as a general-purpose daily-driver operating system, since many of its default configurations prioritize tool access over typical desktop hardening.
