LIMIT caps how many rows come back, so ORDER BY price DESC LIMIT 5 gives the top five. Together these two clauses answer a huge class of common questions about the biggest, smallest, newest, or highest-performing records.

Before writing SQL, phrase the question plainly, such as 'the five newest orders over 500 dollars'. Then translate each part into SELECT, WHERE, ORDER BY, and LIMIT. The clauses will map almost one to one.
4Aggregation with GROUP BY and HAVING
Aggregate functions summarise many rows into one number. COUNT tells you how many, SUM totals a column, and AVG, MIN, and MAX describe it. On their own they collapse the whole table, but with GROUP BY they summarise per category. SELECT region, SUM(sales) FROM orders GROUP BY region answers 'how much did each region sell?'.
HAVING filters those grouped results, the way WHERE filters rows. To find only regions selling more than a million, you add HAVING SUM(sales) > 1000000. The key distinction beginners must learn is that WHERE filters individual rows before grouping, while HAVING filters the summarised groups afterward.
5JOINs: Combining Multiple Tables
Real databases spread data across related tables, and JOINs bring them together. Customers might live in one table and orders in another, linked by a customer ID. An INNER JOIN matches rows that exist in both tables, letting you answer 'which customers placed which orders?' in a single query.
Learn the main join types and when each applies. INNER JOIN keeps only matching rows, while a LEFT JOIN keeps every row from the first table even when there is no match, which is how you find customers with zero orders. JOINs are the concept that separates trivial queries from real analysis, so give them extra practice.

- LEFT JOIN: all rows from the left table, matched where possible.
- The ON clause defines how the tables relate, usually by a shared key.
- Practice question: list every customer and their total order value, including those who never ordered.
6Window Functions: Analysis Without Collapsing Rows
Window functions perform calculations across a set of rows while keeping every individual row visible, which GROUP BY cannot do. With ROW_NUMBER, RANK, and running totals using SUM OVER, you can rank products within each category or compute a cumulative sales figure over time.
These are more advanced, so meet them once the earlier clauses are comfortable. They answer sophisticated questions like 'what is each employee's rank in their department by sales?' in a single elegant query, and interviewers often use them to separate strong candidates from beginners.
7How SQL Actually Executes a Query
You write SQL in one order but the database runs it in another, and knowing this prevents baffling errors. Execution starts with FROM and JOINs to assemble the data, then WHERE filters rows, then GROUP BY groups them, then HAVING filters groups, then SELECT chooses columns, and finally ORDER BY sorts and LIMIT trims.
This explains common beginner confusion, such as why you cannot use a column alias from SELECT inside WHERE: WHERE runs before SELECT. Holding this execution order in mind makes SQL feel logical rather than arbitrary.
⚠️WHERE and HAVING are not interchangeable
Use WHERE to filter raw rows before aggregation and HAVING to filter aggregated results afterward. Putting an aggregate in WHERE, or a row condition needlessly in HAVING, is a frequent beginner error.
