After cleaning, you create a revenue column as quantity times price, then sanity-check it: are all revenues positive, do the monthly totals look plausible, does the row count match expectations after dropping bad rows? Trustworthy analysis depends on this verification, because a dashboard built on dirty data confidently displays wrong answers.

In our store the exploration surfaces a clear story: revenue is growing but dipped in one month after a stockout, three products drive most sales, one region lags badly, and returning customers spend nearly double what new ones do. These findings, not every possible chart, are what the dashboard should highlight. Exploration is how you separate signal from noise.

As you slice the data, keep interrogating it so the dashboard ends up featuring genuine insight rather than filler.
What is the overall trend, and are there sudden dips or spikes worth explaining?
Which few items or segments account for most of the total?
Where are the surprising gaps, such as an underperforming region?

Now you build, and design means choosing what to show and how to arrange it for a reader, not cramming in every chart. Lead with the headline metrics the owner checks first, such as total revenue and month-over-month growth, as large summary numbers at the top. Below them, place the supporting charts in reading order.
For our store, a strong layout puts key totals across the top, a monthly revenue line chart as the centerpiece, a bar chart of revenue by product beside it, a regional breakdown, and a small comparison of new versus returning customer value. Keep color meaning consistent across every panel and give each chart one clear job, so the whole thing reads in seconds.

7Adding Interactivity That Helps
Interactivity turns a static report into a tool, but only when it serves the reader's questions. Useful controls let the owner filter by date range, drill into a single region, or toggle between revenue and units. Each control should answer a follow-up question the static view naturally provokes.
Resist adding filters just because you can. A dropdown nobody uses is clutter that makes the dashboard harder to understand. The test is simple: for every interactive element, name the question it helps answer. If you cannot, remove it. Good interactivity feels like a conversation with the data, not a control panel to decode.
