SAP S/4HANA addresses a structural problem in older enterprise software: transactional systems and analytical systems were traditionally separate, so financial and operational reporting relied on periodically copying data into a warehouse. Because the suite runs on the HANA column-store database, aggregations, currency conversions, and margin calculations that once required precomputed summary tables can instead be calculated on demand from granular line-item data, at the moment a report is requested.
