Matter is a cross-vendor smart-home connectivity standard, developed by the Connectivity Standards Alliance, that defines a common application layer so that smart-home devices from different manufacturers can work together regardless of which underlying wireless network they use. It runs over Wi-Fi, Thread, or Ethernet, and it aims to let a single device be controlled interchangeably by different smart-home platforms rather than being locked to one ecosystem's app.
Overview
Matter was created to address the fragmentation that had built up in the smart-home market, where a light bulb certified for one company's ecosystem often could not be controlled through another company's app or voice assistant, forcing consumers to either commit to a single vendor's ecosystem or juggle multiple apps and hubs for different devices in the same home. This fragmentation was a genuine adoption barrier, since buyers could not be confident a device they purchased would keep working if they later switched smart-home platforms. Mechanically, Matter is an application-layer standard, meaning it defines the data model and commands devices use to describe themselves and respond to instructions, such as turning on or setting brightness, independent of the network carrying those messages. It runs on top of IP-based networks, using Wi-Fi or Ethernet for devices that can afford more power, and Thread, a low-power mesh protocol, for battery-powered devices like sensors and locks. A Matter device is commissioned into a network using a setup code and a controller app, after which any Matter-compatible platform on that network can discover and control it, rather than the device being tied permanently to the platform that first set it up. Matter differs from Zigbee and BLE in that it operates one layer higher: those are network and radio protocols concerned with how bits move between devices, while Matter defines what those bits mean once they arrive, and it explicitly builds on Thread as one of its supported network layers rather than competing with it. This layering is what allows Matter to unify ecosystems that previously used incompatible proprietary application layers even when running over similar radios. In practice, Matter certification appears on smart bulbs, plugs, locks, thermostats, and sensors, and major smart-home platforms have added Matter support so that a Matter-certified device can be added to more than one ecosystem's app without needing a separate hub or bridge for each. This has begun to reduce, though not eliminate, the need for consumers to check ecosystem compatibility before buying a specific smart-home device. The main limitation is that Matter does not cover every device category or every existing feature vendors previously offered through proprietary integrations, so some advanced, vendor-specific functionality may still require that vendor's own app even for a Matter-certified device. Older, pre-Matter smart-home devices also do not gain Matter support automatically and often require a bridge or a firmware update from the manufacturer, which not all older hardware receives.
