Definition
Axure RP is an advanced prototyping tool that lets designers build highly interactive, logic-driven prototypes — including conditional flows and dynamic data — without writing code.
Overview
Axure RP is known for supporting a level of prototype interactivity and logic that goes beyond most design tools, including conditional branching, variables, dynamic content, and simulated data-driven behavior. This makes it possible to prototype complex application flows — such as form validation, multi-step wizards, or dashboards with dynamic states — closely enough to real functionality that they can be used for detailed usability testing, in contrast to simpler tools like Balsamiq or Marvel App. Designers work with a widget library and a visual canvas similar to other prototyping tools, but layer in Axure's interaction and logic panel to define conditions, events, and variables that drive prototype behavior — effectively a visual scripting layer for prototypes. Axure also generates detailed specification documents and supports team collaboration through Axure Cloud, where prototypes can be shared, commented on, and reviewed. Because of this depth, Axure RP has traditionally been favored by enterprise UX teams and business analysts working on complex, data-intensive applications where the interaction logic itself needs to be validated before development, rather than by teams needing quick, lightweight mockups like those built in Zeplin or InVision handoff workflows, or the sensor-driven prototypes made in ProtoPie.
