It is the sole global supplier of extreme ultraviolet (EUV) lithography systems, the technology required to manufacture the most advanced logic chips, giving it an effective monopoly at the most critical step of leading-edge chip production. Overview
ASML occupies an unusually concentrated position in the technology supply chain: every advanced chip made anywhere in the world, including processors from Intel, AMD, and the foundries that manufacture chips for Apple and Nvidia, depends at some point on a machine ASML builds. Lithography is the process step that projects a circuit pattern onto a photosensitive layer on a silicon wafer, defining where subsequent etching and deposition steps will act, and as transistor features have shrunk to a few nanometers, the physics of that projection process has become the industry's central bottleneck. Mechanically, ASML's most advanced systems use extreme ultraviolet light at a wavelength of 13.5 nanometers, generated by vaporizing tin droplets with a high-powered laser thousands of times per second, then reflecting that light through a series of ultra-precise mirrors to project a circuit pattern onto a wafer with sub-nanometer accuracy. This is an extraordinarily difficult engineering problem: EUV light is absorbed by nearly everything, including air, so the entire optical path must operate in a vacuum, and the mirrors must be polished to tolerances far tighter than anything used in earlier lithography generations. No other company has succeeded in building a commercially viable EUV system, which is why ASML's position differs categorically from ordinary market leadership. Within the semiconductor equipment industry, ASML is often grouped with Applied Materials and Lam Research, but its role is distinct: those companies compete across multiple, substitutable process steps, whereas ASML has no direct competitor for EUV lithography and only partial competition from Japanese lithography makers at older, less advanced process nodes. This makes ASML's relationship with its customers — TSMC, Samsung, Intel, and other leading-edge chipmakers — closer to that of an essential utility than a typical vendor relationship. In practice, a chipmaker cannot manufacture a leading-edge logic chip without EUV lithography, so access to ASML's machines effectively determines which companies and countries are capable of fabricating the most advanced semiconductors. Each EUV system is also enormously expensive and complex to install, requiring a dedicated cleanroom facility and months of calibration, which limits how quickly new fabrication capacity can come online even when demand is high. Because of this chokepoint position, ASML's export sales are subject to significant government oversight: the Dutch government, coordinating with allied nations, restricts sales of its most advanced EUV systems to certain countries, most notably limiting exports to China, which has made ASML a focal point in broader disputes over semiconductor supply chain control. This regulatory dimension is unusual for an equipment supplier and means ASML's customer base is shaped as much by geopolitics as by commercial demand.
