The OSI model gives a shared vocabulary for describing exactly where a problem sits — a physical cable issue versus a routing issue versus an application-level issue — which speeds up troubleshooting considerably.

Many organizations now run hybrid infrastructure spanning on-premises hardware and one or more cloud providers, which means network engineers increasingly need to understand virtual private clouds, cloud load balancers, and cloud-native security groups alongside traditional hardware.
This shift hasn't replaced traditional networking knowledge — it has added a cloud layer on top of it, so both skill sets are typically needed together rather than one replacing the other.
