1What Is a LAN?
A local area network, or LAN, is a network that connects devices within a single physical location — a home, an office floor, or a school building — so they can share files, printers, and internet access.
The defining feature of a LAN is its limited physical scope: it stays within one site, in contrast to a wide area network that spans multiple locations.
2How a LAN Is Built
Most LANs are built from a mix of wired Ethernet cabling and wireless Wi-Fi, connected together through switches and wireless access points.
A switch sits at the center of a wired LAN, forwarding data between connected devices, while an access point extends that same network to Wi-Fi devices.

3LAN vs WAN

A wide area network, the internet being the largest example, connects multiple LANs together across cities, countries, or continents, generally at lower speeds and higher latency than a LAN provides internally.
4The Role of the Router
A router is the device that connects a LAN to the outside world, most commonly to the internet, and it is a distinct job from what a switch does inside the LAN.
The router examines traffic destined for outside the LAN and forwards it onward, while traffic between two devices on the same LAN never needs to leave through the router at all.
5Segmenting a LAN with VLANs
A VLAN, or virtual LAN, lets administrators logically separate groups of devices on the same physical network without running separate cabling for each group.
This is useful for isolating traffic between departments, keeping guest Wi-Fi separate from internal systems, or grouping devices by function even when they share the same physical switches.

Segmenting sensitive devices onto their own VLAN, keeping firmware updated on switches and access points, and controlling who can physically or wirelessly join the network are foundational LAN security practices.
